4th, April
Every year hundreds of New Yorkers make their way through the streets of the Big Apple to celebrate Easter. The traditional parade dates back to the civil war period and features a host of colourful costumes and extravagant Easter bonnets. This popular Easter tradition takes place each Easter Sunday, in the area around Fifth Avenue from 49th to 57th streets.
The festivities begin at 10am on Fifth Avenue at 49th street, near the Rockefeller Center and St Patrick’s Church (a beautiful 19th-century gothic building). The streets throng with colour and excitement as participants parade with their elaborate bonnets that range from incredible floral displays to harbouring live animals. The parade is a spectacle that has to be seen to be believed. Anyone can join in the annual march but, with viewing platforms situated next to St Patrick’s Church, it is just as much fun to stand and watch the outrageous outfits on display.
